Tall Ships Race: July 2005

I took this photograph at the start of the race, when the ships, in all their various classes, were reaching open water after leaving Waterford, Ireland, and beginning their journey to Cherbourg-Octeville, France.

This photograph doesn’t do the moment itself justice; it was awe-inspiring, overwhelming and like nothing I had experienced before.

What the photograph does show you is that it was an impressive sight, slightly reminiscent of 18th century Navy, merchants and pirates out at sea.
